Workshops at our
Creative Arts Centre
The Creative Arts Centre is home base for all of our community programs, rehearsals and activities. It hosts an active and evolving workshop and meeting space, The Hub Shop and Music Studio.
Painting basics covered included: Mixing basic colours and paint textures; learning brush techniques, painting basic shapes, fading and blending colours, understanding light and perspective, correcting common errors, and sketching a still life.
Higher Vibrations with Colin Peters, The Hub’s Creative Director, focuses on three modules: Songwriting, voice training and recording.
We had the pleasure of hosting a four-week Djembe drumming workshop in September 2019 led by renowned Elder drummer and drum-maker Nzimbu Browne. The course which trained 25 youth and 4 adults was so well received that we decided to make our own drums. Our Creative Arts Centre has 8 hand-made coconut tree trunk djembe drums and we utilize them during our community activities.
Pon De Reef with David Taylor pays attention to the maritime histories of Bequia and seeks to impart knowledge to youth as it relates to snorkelling, traditional fishing methods, seamanship, and water safety coupled with traditional coastal navigation methods. In addition, youth will learn about traditional boating education, how to set fishing pots, how to spear fish and in general they will gain a better knowledge of the marine ecosystem of our island. The maritime course was offered to 15 youth between the ages of 7 -17 and was supported by Action Bequia.
Movement: Igniting Passion and Memory with Cherry Byron, is an intensive dance training workshop for youth engaging in movement, breath and expression while also learning about traditional Vincentian, Garifuna and Afro Caribbean dance traditions. The program will also train participants in tactical skills - teaching youth how to balance, use their core strength, and prevent injury. Over 20 Bequia youth applied to the program, through an audition program we accepted eight youth with the intention of having this becoming a regular activity offered 2-3 times a year, and was supported by Action Bequia.
“The Hub is so much fun, and it helped me be brave! Love you all, and I appreciate each and everyone of you. Thanks for everything!”
